Department of Chemistry, V.O. Chidambaram College

DST-FIST funded

The department of Chemistry was established in 1951 and it initially offered Chemistry as an intermediate course. S. Ramachandran was the first head of the department. Due to the noble efforts of the then founder Secretary Shri. A. P. C. Veerabahu, Principal Shri. A. Srinivasa Raghavan and K. S. Narayanan, B.Sc. in Chemistry was started in 1957.
M.Sc. Chemistry was started in 1970. Our department is the first to offer M.Sc. Chemistry in the districts of Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari. Dr. K. Karunakaran, the first Head of the Department, and Dr. C. Srinivasan, Reader in Chemistry (Professor Emeritus (Rtd.), MKU), were responsible for giving the initial impetus to the Department. Our PG students secure university ranks every year and many of them are placed globally. Our alumni are working as scientists in national institutions like CSIR, DST, ISRO, and many reputed industries and universities.
M.Sc. Chemistry was started also as an unaided course in 1987. As many of our students aspired for research oriented higher studies, M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Chemistry were started in 1987. Then onwards the department strives hard to explore the areas of Nano Chemistry, electrochemistry and the Material Chemistry.
“M.Sc. Nano Science”, funded by UGC under innovative programme scheme, was started in 2012 with noble efforts of the honourable secretary of V. O. Chidambaram College Thiru A.P.C.V. Chockalingam, the present Principal Dr. C. Veerabahu, the former Principal-in-Charge S. Maragathasundaram, Prof. M. Balamurugesan, and the course coordinator Dr. C. Vedhi.
The department follows Choice Based Credit System [CBCS] with continuous assessment. The department has a DST–FIST funded laboratory and a DST FastTrack scheme laboratory. The department has received research grants from UGC, DST, TNSCST for major, minor and student research projects. The department has been funded by DST/FIST Phase I (2004) for Rs. 10,00, 000 and Rs. 31,34,303 by DST/FIST Phase II (2012).

Ashok, Dr. S. Kumareson, S. Maragathasundaram, T.Eswara Yuvaraj, Prof. S. Sankara Raman,  Dr. T. Balasubramaniam and Prof. M. Balamurugesan have served in this Department.

Message from
Dr. K. Karunakaran

The correct and constructive decision and the dedicated determination of the enthusiastic educationist ,excellent administrator and outstanding visionary our Founder Honorary Secretary APCV resulted in the starting of Post Graduate courses in V.O.Chidambaram College,  first and just to help the young graduates of the underprivileged section of the society  in the southern districts of Tamilnadu acquire their cherished Masters degree with less financial strain on their family in Tuticorin not far away from their native villages.
The long felt need of these young graduates was met, their ever  delayed opportunity was provided and their  never realised dream came true  in 1970 by starting the Post Graduate Department of Chemistry in V.O.Chidambaram College by our Founder Honorary Secretary  with missionary zeal in spite of the great financial burden
Under His able guidance and constant supervision and continuous encouragement  a team of young energetic and talented teachers trained in Madras, Annamalai and Madurai Universities worked hard and sincerely in building, furnishing, equipping, nourishing and developing the department and established it to be a grade one post graduate chemistry department  in the south Tamilnadu within a short  span of three  years to the full satisfaction of our Founder Honorary Secretary.
The products of this department, the highly qualified and talented post graduates were readily and easily absorbed  in various colleges including our own department to strengthen the faculty with well trained and fully equipped personnel. In addition  the department also produced many brilliant rank holders, who joined the Research Departments  in various universities and IITs for higher studies, came out successfully with flying colours in the Ph.D programmes and are occupying the highest  positions in different universities and industries  through out India and abroad
Few of our products who worked in colleges carried out research in IITs and universities under FIP to improve their knowledge and standard, got  the Ph.D., degree  and moved to high positions in universities
At a later stage when PUC was merged with  High School as Plus Two course our products were used in the Higher Secondary Schools mainly. The senior college staff were taken for the M.Phil programme in our department to expose them to the latest developments in the subject. The Research Wing of the department became active  by guiding the scholars for Ph.D., programme.
After the unfortunate, unexpected and untimely demise of our founder secretary, our current secretary, APCVC, took up the reins at an young age but with rich experience   inherited from his father, our founder secretary, and steering the ship carefully with commitment and  dedication, efficiently and tactfully overcoming all the challenges, storms and turbulences in the educational ocean.

Dear friends,

I am happy to meet you through this blog. I am also privileged to talk to you about the department of Chemistry, Post Graduate and Research Department of Chemistry of our college. This department was envisaged by our visionary founder to provide specific job skills for the youth of this neighborhood. Later, he expanded it into a post graduate department. All these were achieved in spite of numerous hurdles and financial challenges. Many seasoned educationists called this attempt “a white elephant”. But, Kulapathi persisted and accomplished a near impossible task. Today we stand on his shoulders.  A modest beginning is now a research department. Great scholars and academicians like Dr. C. Srinivasan, Dr. K. Karunakaran, Dr. A. Balasubramaniam and Dr. E. Balasivasubramanian have served this department. Eminent researchers like Dr. Ashok and Dr. Kumaresan from this department have gone on to make their names in international research institutes. Most of our students are highly placed in India and around the world. Today, this is a research department offering Ph.D. and M.Phil. programmes also. Its state of the art labs and latest equipment, parallel the best anywhere. As we recall the visionary zeal and commitment of our founder, we also remember the immense contributions made by our former faculty and students for the development of this department. This is a great legacy we are proud of. This is a culture we will build upon and uphold. Thank you.

Thiru A.P.C.V. Chockalingam,
Secretary, V.O. Chidambaram College
